Romney’s sister: Mitt is ‘not going to be touching’ abortion as president

By Ben Johnson | LifeSiteNews.com | Aug. 30, 2012

Jane Romney says her brother will not affect the pro-abortion status quo.

TAMPA, August 30, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) – The prospect of Mitt Romney winning the White House in November fills Sandra Fluke with fear and pro-lifers with relief. But according to his sister, Mitt Romney will not affect the nation’s abortion laws and certainly will not ban the killing of the unborn if he is elected president.

Jane Romney, the candidate’s eldest sister, said the feminist fear that a President Romney would restrict abortion-on-demand was “conjured.”

“He’s not going to be touching any of that,” she said at a “Women for Mitt” event that coincided with the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

She added that “Mitt’s much more in the middle” on abortion than the GOP platform, which favors informed consent and waiting periods in addition to a Right to Life amendment.

“It’s not his focus,” Jane said.

Romney, who has gone from pro-life to pro-choice and back again, inspired confusion when he said recently that the abortion issue is “settled” in the courts and can only be affected by the Supreme Court.

He also stirred fear among his party’s pro-life base when he said, “I’m in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother.”

Until this week, the campaign held that “a Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape,” incest, or to save a mother’s life. The maternal “health” exception has been interpreted broadly enough to allow abortion under any circumstance. While it is possible that Romney misspoke in including the “health” exception, the campaign has yet to issue a correction.

Despite Romney’s centrist abortion policy and a checkered history on the issue, the Obama campaign has released a factually challenged series of television commercials accusing Romney of being a pro-life fanatic, hellbent on restricting “a woman’s right to choose.”

Planned Parenthood launched a $1.4 million anti-Romney ad campaign this summer.

If his sister is right, their fears are misplaced.

For her own part, Jane says she believes “life is sacred,” but “every woman needs to be left to make her own choice.”

The California-based actress is said to have supported Senator Barbara Boxer and Governor Jerry Brown, both outspoken advocates of abortion rights.
