"What? What?" Failure To Supply Earplugs Cost Thousands of GIs Their Hearing

Thousands of GIs have suffered preventable hearing loss because they were not supplied with earplugs to reduce the din of battle. Many have a permanent ringing in their ears they will suffer throughout their lives. The condition is widespread. In 2006, the Veterans Administration paid out more than a half billion dollars to veterans with tinnitus, a condition which affects nearly half of those troops exposed to blasts.

Friday: 1 UK Soldier, 45 Iraqis Killed; 84 Iraqis Wounded

A female suicide bomber entered a tent filled with Arbaeen pilgrims and killed dozens in a third day of significant sectarian attacks. Overall, at least 45 Iraqis were killed and another 84 were wounded across the country. One British soldier was also killed during a shooting incident in southern Iraq. Also, Former interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, whose National List made modest gains in provincial elections, insisted that national elections later this year must be made "fairer" that the recent one or else Iraq's fragile peace will be in danger.

US 'lost track of Afghan weapons'

The US military has failed to keep track of thousands of weapons shipped to Afghanistan, leaving them vulnerable to being lost or stolen, a report says. The report has been compiled by congressional auditors, the US Government Accountability Office (GAO). It found that, in the four years up to June 2008, the US military failed to keep complete records on some 222,000 weapons entering the country.

Wednesday: 30 Iraqis Killed, 88 Wounded

At least 30 Iraqis were killed and 88 more were wounded during attacks that included a significant bombing in Baghdad. No Coalition deaths were reported, but the mystery of four Guantánamo detainees who were handed over to Iraq has apparently been solved. Meanwhile, Iran's foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, today joined the parade of foreign dignitaries visiting Baghdad.

We are now able to estimate the number of Iraqis who have died in the war instigated by the Bush administration. Looking at the empirical evidence of Bush's war legacy will put his claims of victory in perspective. Of course, even by his standards -- "stability" -- the jury is out. Most independent analysts would say it's too soon to judge the political outcome. Nearly six years after the invasion, the country remains riven by sectarian politics and major unresolved issues, like the status of Kirkuk.

Doctors Spooked by Israel's Mystery Weapon

US-led troops kill 1,100 Afghan civilians

A human rights group says foreign troops stationed in Afghanistan are responsible for more than a quarter of the civilian deaths in 2008. The Kabul-based Afghanistan Rights Monitor (ARM) said Wednesday that out of a total of 4,000 civilians killed in the conflict last year, 1,100 were killed by US and NATO troops or operations.
