Thousands of GIs have suffered preventable hearing loss because they were not supplied with earplugs to reduce the din of battle. Many have a permanent ringing in their ears they will suffer throughout their lives. The condition is widespread. In 2006, the Veterans Administration paid out more than a half billion dollars to veterans with tinnitus, a condition which affects nearly half of those troops exposed to blasts. Read

Friday: 1 UK Soldier, 45 Iraqis Killed; 84 Iraqis Wounded

A female suicide bomber entered a tent filled with Arbaeen pilgrims and killed dozens in a third day of significant sectarian attacks. Overall, at least 45 Iraqis were killed and another 84 were wounded across the country. One British soldier was also killed during a shooting incident in southern Iraq. Also, Former interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, whose National List made modest gains in provincial elections, insisted that national elections later this year must be made "fairer" that the recent one or else Iraq's fragile peace will be in danger. US 'lost track of Afghan weapons'

The US military has failed to keep track of thousands of weapons shipped to Afghanistan, leaving them vulnerable to being lost or stolen, a report says. The report has been compiled by congressional auditors, the US Government Accountability Office (GAO). Army suicides at three-decade high

Suicides among Army troops shot up again last year and is at a nearly three-decade high, senior defense officials told The Associated Press on Thursday. At least 128 soldiers killed themselves in 2008, said two officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because the data has not been formally released.

US-led troops kill 1,100 Afghan civilians
