Iran diplomat kidnapped, insecurity mounts in Pakistan

Gunmen abducted an Iranian diplomat in Peshawar on Thursday, a day after a U.S. aid worker was shot dead in the city on the front line of an Islamist insurgency sweeping northwest Pakistan and parts of Afghanistan. Suspicion for the kidnapping will inevitably fall on the Taliban and affiliated Sunni Muslim militant groups such as al Qaeda, who hate Shi'ite Muslims and predominantly Shi'ite Iran almost as much as they hate the West. Wednesday: 4 US Soldiers, 31 Iraqis Killed; 109 Iraqis Wounded

Ten Iraqi militant groups have vowed to protest a proposed U.S.-Iraq security agreement by escalating violence against security forces. They have seemingly kept their promise in Baghdad where several significant bombings occurred today. Overall, at least 31 Iraqis were killed and another 109 were wounded in attacks across the country. In Zanjili, four U.S. soldiers were killed and three others were wounded during an incident involving an Iraqi soldier. Also, the United Nations reported that one million Iraqi still lack adequate food.

Blackwater likely to be fined millions in Iraq weapons case

The State Department is preparing to slap a multi-million dollar fine on private military contractor Blackwater USA for shipping hundreds of automatic weapons to Iraq without the necessary permits.
